After over two years of war between israel and hamas, the big breakthrough was announced. Israel and hamas Committed to a ceasefire under a U.S.-brokered plan crafted by donald trump. the deal involves hostage exchange, israeli withdrawal and solid reconstruction plans with long term governance plans of gaza. But amongst this peace plan many questions have Arose is this a genuine diplomatic achievement with lasting peace or will the region.
To understand the peace deal fully we need to take it apart and see what is Included in the deal. I took apart the 20 point peace plan and simplified it to 10 More defining points:
- end of war
- hostage/prisoner exchange
- safe passage & amnesty
- Aid & reconstruction
- redevelopment & governance
- Demilitarisation & ISF (international Stabilisation force)
- israeli withdrawal
- contingency plan
- Interfaith & cultural plan
- path to statehood
these points aim to make gaza a place for peace and prosperity under a sustained U.S. leadership.
this deal is extremely ambitious and it does not Guarantee success with the previous turmoil which has happened within the region.
We can see the strong sense of diplomacy as it Looks from first thought to be a genuine act of foreign policy aiming to end one of the worlds most deadly conflicts.
firstly, it should be appreciated that after over two years of conflict which felt as if it was trapped in cycles of failed ceasefires, that both sides finally came to the table. this is no small feet. these talks may Not be perfect but its progress in a Region which Doesn’t see much positive talks.
this plan goes beyond just dropping the guns but laying out solid governance and reconstruction. if executed as prompted this could reshape the future of gaza.
despite being the face of the Deal, trump Isn’t actually the complete center of the peace process, there is many global actors; egypt, qatar & Turkey are just a few nations who have endorsed this peace plan. it is argued that such wide endorsement adds credibility since it’s not just the U.S.A. calling all the shots.
Despite all this, it can be seen to performative to an extent. with seemingly unresolved issues, do we truly know if palestine is completely recognised from this? What does Hamas become? Who is the true enforces long term?
It can be noted that terms such as a demilitarisation may sound decisive but the term can be twisted without clear enforcement mechanisms. Trumps words looked to be More pressure than persuasion undermining the diplomacy at Work.
we can look at this deal from two angles, short term & long term.
Is this what is needed now, yes completely, it brings much needed optimism within the local area and establishes a ceasefire which was the set out goal prior to the talks.
But in the longer term it is very ambitious and relies on a lot of things to happen Which may not. will the resources be given to reconstruct, will the governance be Successful & carry forward through many years? will the ceasefire even be followed by both sides?
to answer the question of the article of where Trumps strategy stands, for now atleast it is on the boarder of both diplomacy and display. it is the sort of moment we can evaluate in the next few months
